Spinal infections are most often caused by bacteria such as staphylococcus or E. coli. These infections can affect the bones, discs, and soft tissues in the spine. It is not uncommon for spinal infections to begin as an infection in another part of the body and then spread to your spine with time.

Spinal infections usually result from traumatic injury or spinal surgery. These infections can weaken your spinal discs and spread through your vertebrae, causing your bones to deteriorate and possibly shift out of alignment.

Symptoms of a spinal infection may include:

  • Pain
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Muscle spasms
  • Weight loss

Treatments for a spinal infection may include rest, medications, and a back brace to help support the spine. If the spinal infection is severe, surgery may be required.
